How do I become a citizen of St. Kitts and Nevis?

Nestled in the heart of the Caribbean, St. Kitts and Nevis offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and business opportunities. As a twin-island nation, it boasts lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and a warm tropical climate, making it an ideal destination for leisure and commerce.

The country has a stable political environment, favourable tax incentives, and a well-developed infrastructure, presenting an inviting landscape for investment. The islands’ strategic location and established financial sector further enhance its appeal, attracting entrepreneurs and investors seeking to establish a presence in the region.

Saint Kitts & Nevis stands out as the pioneer of citizenship-by-investment initiatives, dating back to 1984. This program continues to attract qualified investors, cementing its status as one of the globe’s preferred citizenship options. In addition, it’s possible to become a citizen of St. Kitts and Nevis through marriage, descent, and naturalisation for long-term residents.

So, let’s now examine these different routes to residency and citizenship in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Eligibility criteria for citizenship

Requirements for the primary applicant are as follows:

How do I become a citizen of St. Kitts and Nevis?

There are several routes, including citizenship by investment, marriage, and descent. Let’s look at each in more detail.

St. Kitts and Nevis offers two investment pathways within its citizenship-by-investment program:

Additional fees:

For the real estate, private home, and public benefit investment options, the following additional government fees are applicable:

  • Main applicant: USD 25,000
  • Spouse: USD 15,000
  • Each dependent child or qualified dependent under 18: USD 10,000
  • Each dependent child aged 18 or above or qualified dependent: USD 15,000

For expedited applications, the corresponding fees will apply:

  • Main applicant: USD 42,500
  • Spouse: USD 32,500
  • Each dependent child or other qualified dependent under 18: USD 22,500
  • Each dependent child aged 18 or above or qualified dependent: USD 32,500

Naturalisation

Individuals who have established long-term residency in St. Kitts and Nevis can apply for citizenship through this avenue. This pathway, however, is the most prolonged, necessitating a continuous residence in the country for at least 14 consecutive years, with the last 12 years preceding the application uninterrupted. Applicants are required to complete a form provided by the Ministry of National Security, detailing all registered addresses within the nation where they have resided. Upon successful citizenship approval, there’s a fee of USD 5,320 for processing.

Descent

Individuals with ancestral ties to St. Kitts and Nevis may qualify for citizenship under specific criteria. To initiate the process, applicants must submit a comprehensive form to the Ministry of National Security, either in person or via consular channels. This form necessitates detailed information about the applicant’s parents or grandparents, including their names, dates and places of birth, and usual places of residence.

The applicant must supply their residential history for the past decade and disclose any criminal record. Alongside the form, applicants must submit documents such as birth certificates for the themselves, parents, and possibly grandparents, police clearance (for applicants aged 16 and above), two passport-sized photographs, and an application fee of USD 55.

Marriage

Acquiring citizenship through marriage to a St. Kitts and Nevis national is contingent upon three years of legal matrimony. To commence the application process, applicants must submit an application form to the Ministry of National Security and Information, accompanied by the following:

  • Marriage certificate
  • Birth certificate of the applicant
  • Birth certificate of the spouse
  • Divorce decree or death certificate (if applicable, for prior marriages of either spouse)
  • Police certificate from all places of residency within the past six months
  • Two passport-sized photos

Additionally, applicants must remit an application fee, the amount of which is determined by the year of marriage registration. The fee for marriages registered before 1983 is USD 185; for those after 1983, it is USD 370.

It is crucial to understand that the government reserves the right to deny citizenship applications if the spouses are in the process of divorce or no longer cohabiting. Moreover, marrying a St. Kitts and Nevis national solely for the purpose of obtaining citizenship is strictly prohibited.
